Caregiver update: Florence Kaluuba

As a regular feature on the blog, we want to share some of the updates we receive from the caregivers in our study. This week we are featuring Florence Kaluuba and the changes at Mirembe Community College and Community Restoration Initiative (CORE)—with lots of pictures!

Recent graduation ceremony at Mirembe Community College

Mirembe Community College is back up and running after periodic lockdowns related to COVID-19. These pictures are from graduation ceremonies at the end of 2021.

The “CORE” boys graduate

In 2021, the group of young men that Florence brought in through Community Restoration Initiative (CORE) graduated from the technical college with their certificates.

Meanwhile, Florence herself earned a Master's Degree in Community Participation and Strategic Management from Ndejje University.

The organization also furthered its gardening programs. They started an urban garden project in addition to the existing gardens at Mirembe’s rural campus.

Finally, in the past few years the infrastructure of the Mirembe campus has been continually improved. Pictures of Florence at various parts of the site are below.

Finally, they have started doing “short courses” for women and girls in basic entrepreneurial skills: baking, weaving, and making household products (shampoo, vaseline, liquid soap, yogurt, ice cream, etc.)
